Cessation — Maternal Smoking

The Association of Maternal & Child Health Programs (AMCHP) Tobacco Prevention mini-grant award for $5000 was awarded to the RI Prematurity Task Force’s Tobacco Prevention Among Women of Reproductive Age Workgroup.  There is strong evidence that maternal tobacco use is associated with higher risk for preterm birth and since pregnant women have been identified as a group that is disparately affected by tobacco use, this is an important collaboration.  The Task Force and the Tobacco Control Program will use this funding to develop a best practices guide to be included in the Quitworks package in treating tobacco dependence among pregnant and breastfeeding women.

Cessation — Quitworks Update

QuitWorks-RI is a free, evidence-based stop-smoking service sponsored by the Rhode Island Department of Health. The project’s aim is to implement a fax referral quit smoking system, modeled on the Massachusetts QuitWorks Program, in the Rhode Island healthcare system.

Outreach and recruitment efforts began in June 2006 to various hospitals and community health centers around the state. Hospitals that have successfully adopted the program include Lifespan systems, Care New England systems, Landmark Medical and Roger Williams Hospital. Community Health Centers include the Providence Community Health Center, Blackstone Valley, East Providence Community Action Program, Northwest Community Health Center and Thundermist West Warwick.

Outreach and recruitment efforts have expanded for 2007 and 2008 to include physician practices, wellness sites, and certified diabetic outpatient educators.  Since the program’s inception, health care providers have referred 235 smokers to QuitWorks-RI!

If you know of practices which may be interested in adopting the program, please email Mary Ellen Casey, Quitworks Coordinator at  mcasey@riqio.sdps.org
