Around RI

RI’s Comprehensive Tobacco Control Program Phase II has begun.

Phase II will encompass and expand upon the original comprehensive tobacco control initiative by focusing on curbing access to tobacco products, engaging community support to reduce the availability of tobacco products to youth, to reduce tobacco company promotions that negate the health effects of the cigarette excise tax, and to seek a voluntary reduction in advertising of tobacco products within 500 feet of schools and playgrounds. It will focus on mapping tobacco at the community level – its sale, advertising and promotions, and tobacco industry targeting of certain groups.

Welcome our new (and seasoned) tobacco control partners:

  • Progreso Latino
  • Woonsocket Task Force
  • Urban League of Rhode Island
  • Crossroads Rhode Island
  • Pawtucket Substance Abuse Prevention Task Force
  • International Institute of Rhode Island

We look forward to working closely with you during Phase II and beyond.

Sincerely,

Betty Harvey, Carol Hall-Walker, Seema Dixit, Donna Levesque, Kelly Doyle, and Lina Alba-Navarro.

New "Infect Truth" Ads
Patricia McLaughlin, American Legacy Foundation

The Legacy Foundation launched a new wave of Truth ads, "Infect Truth" in late October. The launch began with two new televisionads; additional television, print and radio ads will be released in a segmented manner through March of 2007. The campaign takes advantage of the ubiquity of digital media in teens' lives - offering materials to download that teens can use to "infect" their peers with the Truth message. View these ads, along with any other information at their website www.thetruth.com. The Legacy Foundation anticipates launching a new wave of ads in the early summer of 2007.
