NIH Panel Discusses Tobacco Related Research The National Institutes of Health (NIH) just completed a three-day “State of the Science Conference” on tobacco. An independent panel of scientists considered the available scientific evidence on tobacco use prevention, cessation, and control through presentations from tobacco control experts and public input. At the conclusion of the conference, the independent panel appointed by NIH to review the science disclosed their findings in a statement discussing tobacco taxes, clean indoor air, comprehensive tobacco prevention and cessation programs, mass media campaigns and expanded coverage of cessation. The panel’s endorsement of key tobacco control and prevention methods provides scientific credibility to the policies and programs that the tobacco control community has been supporting. To view the draft state-of-the-science statement, in addition to an archived web cast of the meeting, visit http://consensus.nih.gov/2006/2006TobaccoSOS029html.htm. |
